We always say that chiropractic care to treat chronic pain is a ‘no-brainer’… but a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience may have taken that sentiment to a new level.
Pain and Brain Size
According to the study, suffering from chronic pain has been found to lead to a decrease in gray matter, literally shrinking the brain as your body deals with the suffering.
The shrinkage can be quite significant, as well: Those suffering from persistent chronic pain found a reduction of between 5% and 11% in their gray matter–a reduction that’s the equivalent to roughly 10 to 20 years of natural aging.
Brain shrinkage can increase your risk for a number of serious conditions, including stroke and cardiovascular disorders, as well as presenting a major risk for cognitive decline, behavioural issues, and mental health problems such as depression and schizophrenia.
Regaining your Brain Mass
Thankfully, this reduction isn’t permanent. Through proper pain management and regular treatment, the gray matter lost to chronic pain-related shrinkage tends to reverse, returning the brain to its original mass after the patient is pain-free.
Chiropractic Care and Chronic Pain Treatment
Regular chiropractic care is an extremely effective tool in the management of chronic pain from a number of ailments, including back pain, headaches, joint pain, digestive issues, and a laundry list of other ailments and disorders.
Not only is chiropractic care a versatile method for chronic pain treatment, but it’s often proven to be both safer and more effective than pharmaceutical alternatives. Studies have shown that, for chronic back pain, chiropractic treatment was up to five times more effective than Tylenol, Vioxx, and Celebrex–not to mention the fact that chiropractic treatment doesn’t have the laundry list of side effects that plague many pharmaceutical pain management solutions.
The Logic: Chiropractic Care for Big Healthy Brains
It’s a simple logic puzzle: Chronic pain causes brain shrinkage. Chiropractic care is an effective method of treating chronic pain. Therefore, chiropractic care, on top of all the other health benefits, helps to prevent long-term brain shrinkage in those who suffer from chronic pain.
