One of our fellow chiropractors south of the border released a video featuring a spine-friendly car seat carrying tip which has gone viral—and with good reason.
In the past, we have discussed the strain that carrying a heavy lop-sided object can have on your spine, and a car seat is a worse offender than any purse we’ve seen. It’s very wide and fairly heavy, especially when your baby starts to get a little bigger.
Why Does This Work?
This method of carrying a car seat is effective because it keeps the weight as close to your body as possible, as well as using physics to take much of the weight off of your shoulders.
The hand that is placed underneath the seat doesn’t just carry all of the weight; it makes an axis. Instead of just pulling the car seat straight down and placing all the pressure on your shoulder, gravity tries to tip the far end of the car seat away. Your arm no longer has to directly fight gravity; the elbow that’s hooked into the handle simply has to stay still to resist the sideways-pull of the tipping motion.
Finally, by keeping your arm straightened instead of hooked out as it would be if you were holding it like a basket, you are greatly reducing the amount of work that the muscles and joints of your arms would need to exert.
Always Care For Your Spine
While this method of carrying does greatly decrease the amount of strain your body suffers when carrying a car seat, caring for a child can still be extremely taxing on your body.
