Neuroplasticity: How Toronto Chiropractic Treatment can Improve the Function of Your Brain

What is Neuroplasticity?

Neuroplasticity is the term used to describe permanent changes to the brain, through either the creation or deterioration of neural pathways. Or, put in simple terms, the changes to the ‘inner wiring’ of your brain.

Neuroplasticity has both positive and negative effects: It effects your memory, your cognitive speed, and even your mood.

While younger brains are said to be more ‘plastic’, meaning they can be changed and moulded, even adult and elderly minds are constantly experiencing various forms of neuroplasticity.

Age & Stress on Neuroplasticity

The organs of the human body weren’t designed to last forever, and the brain is no exception. Over time, our brains naturally experience what is known as ‘negative neuroplasticity’, or the impairment of brain function. This slows our reactions, reduces mental clarity (also known as ‘brain fog’), effects our memory, and in many cases, results in degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

This ‘negative neuroplasticity’ is a part of the ‘wear-and-tear’ of our daily lives, but it has been found to be accelerated by elevated levels of stress, be they physical (such as concussive damage), chemical (such as alcoholism or hormonal imbalance), or emotional stress.

Chiropractic Treatment and Neuroplasticity

The primary purpose of chiropractic treatment is to improve the health and functionality of the nervous system–including the brain. Chiropractic treatment works to eliminate many of the stresses that can accelerate neurological decay, improving neurological pathways and promoting ‘positive plasticity’, which is the development, and sometimes re-attainment, of cognitive function.

In fact, this is an area where chiropractic medicine is unique: Most other forms of neurological medicine are reactive, working exclusively to treat impairments to brain function, whereas chiropractic medicine seeks to promote improved neuroplasticity and prevent neurological decay in healthy individuals.
